About Dr Jon Lam

Jon Lam is a highly specialised ophthalmologist trained in both ocular oncology and vitreoretinal surgery.

Jon was born and raised in Perth, Western Australia, where he finished his medical studies at the University of Western Australia, then performed his general registration as a doctor at Royal Perth Hospital. He was accepted into the ophthalmology training program where he completed the program in four years. Following general ophthalmology surgical training he went on to sub-specialise in the intricate art of vitreoretinal surgery. He completed a 12-month vitreoretinal fellowship at Fiona Stanley Hospital and Fremantle Hospital, where he trained in basic and complex retinal surgical diseases, including retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, endophthalmitis, and complicated cataract surgeries.

Inspired by members of his family who have battled cancer, he further pursued sub-specialty training in ocular oncology and choroidal tumours. He was accepted to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital’s ocular oncology fellowship program, the Liverpool Ocular Oncology Centre (LOOC) in the UK. This is one of the most prestigious ocular oncology centres in the world, the forefront of proton beam treatment for choroidal tumours, and the birthplace of many choroidal melanoma treatment modalities. He underwent another 12 months of fellowship at the LOOC, specialising in the treatment of choroidal and retinal tumours and vascular lesions, by treatment with medical and vitreoretinal surgical techniques.

He returns to Perth as both a vitreoretinal surgeon and ocular oncologist. He operates out of Fremantle and Fiona Stanley Hospital in his public posting and will co-manage the choroidal melanoma service with Dr Tim Isaacs. He also operates out of St John of God Subiaco (at their Subiaco Eye Hospital branch) and does a monthly visit to Esperance Hospital where he delivers specialised retinal care to the locals in this beautiful area.

Jon’s medium-term plans are to establish WA’s first stereotactic radiotherapy treatment centre as part of the choroidal melanoma service, in conjunction with the radiation oncologists at GenesisCare and Fiona Stanley Hospital. The aim will be to provide an all-encompassing ocular oncology service out of the South Metropolitan Health Service at the forefront of choroidal and cancer treatment.

Jon’s interpersonal skills translate well to ophthalmology. He values patient chair time and good communication and will endeavour that patients leave with as good an understanding of their ophthalmic disease and care as possible.

Jon is a dedicated father of 2 young boys, and attributes his accomplishments as a team effort with his most supportive wife. His sense of humour has only improved with each successive child. Apart from health and happiness, his only other wish for his family is that they would follow in his love of cycling and join him on the river loop in Perth.
